If you’re not sure what Cotai or the Cotai Strip® in Macao is now, just wait a few years.

There is around 30,000 hotel rooms and many, many casinos being built in Macao on a stretch of land between Macao’s Coloane and Taipa Islands that was reclaimed from the sea just a few years ago. This new area is called Cotai, and about 20,000 of these new hotel rooms are part of Las Vegas Sands Cotai Strip® development in this area.

There are currently four main casino developers building casinos and hotels on the new area of Cotai. Three are in Cotai and Las Vegas Sands is building the Cotai Strip® area of Cotai.

Cotai: these developments are not actually part of the Cotai Strip® that Las Vegas Sands is developing. Sometimes you will see them referred to as part of the Cotai Strip®, but they are not and should be considered as just being in Cotai.

Cotai Strip®: this is the name that LVS has trademarked to capture everything they are developing and building in Cotai.

In addition, Wynn, SJM, and MGM also control land in Cotai and are in the planning stages for large resorts, but are not part of the Cotai Strip®. Plus Harrah’s Entertainment recently purchased a huge golf course south of the Las Vegas Sand’s Cotai Strip®, which I’m sure they would like to redevelop one day. However, this could take a while due to new regulations passed by the Macanese government.
